I have been a busy little bee this week. In addition to removing more nails, I did a lot of research online to ensure that I reinforce and restore the frame in the best way possible.
As I mentioned in the previous post, the frame was riddled with nail holes and the wood was water damaged on the backside f the lower half. To strengthen the wood, I coated the damaged areas with a few layers of MinWax Wood Hardener. The label says it reinforces soft wood fibers and forms a solid base for filling. I painted several layers on with a regular brush. Next I filled the nail holes with DAP Plastic Wood. I chose this product because it says it is strong enough to hold nails and screws. It also contains real wood fibers, which I read is important. I made the mistake of completing this step in my apartment. Halfway through, I had to step outside for fresh air. The smell is very potent! The product seems to have done the job. The cream sections of the frame are the sections that I filled with the plastic wood.
