As you can see in the photo, I removed the three damaged support slats. I was careful when I removed the damaged pieces so that I could use them as a template. I removed the nails, then gently bumped the slats out using a rubber mallet. I was planning to have my dad help me cut the new slats to size when I visit him in three weeks, but I am impatient, so I cut the wood using my hobby miter saw. Not ideal, but it got the job done so that I can move on to the next step: primer. I was hoping to stain the frame, but the damage was too extensive. I have opted for white paint instead.
I happened to come across a Groupon deal for a textile outlet here in Chicago. I paid $50 for $100 worth of fabric! I'll be limited in choice, but you can't argue with the rate!
