Turkey Run State Park is one of my favourite places to visit in Indiana.  No matter how many times I go, it still impresses me.  We usually head that way once a year with a group of friends for a weekend of camping fun.  While we do spend a lot of time at the campsite relaxing, we still plan a big event for each day.  The first day we usually hike through the park. The limestone ravines are just incredible!  The first part of the trail is is heavily wooded and dry, but the ravine is quite muddy with sections of running water.  It's nearly impossible to leave with dry feet, so wear sensible shoes.  The trail ends beside Sugar Creek.  Signs warn visitors that they can't swim, which seems almost cruel on hot days.  If you really want to cool off, there is a  public pool in the park which charges $2 for entry.

It seems silly that you can't swim in the river since several businesses rent tubes for the lazy river. Usually we canoe or kayak Sugar Creek on our second day at the park.   Clements will allow dogs in their canoes, but not in the kayaks or tubes. A decision that is fine by me, since there are snakes in the river! We've only seen two in the five years we've been going there, but  that was more than enough for me.

Our dogs aren't strong swimmers, so we purchased these   Outward Hound life jackets to keep them safe. I love the little handle on the back.  I use it sparingly because I'm concerned about the pressure on their bellies, but it's handy when they need help getting back in the boat.

I recommend keeping smaller dogs close throughout the park because there are birds of prey in the area.

PSA: stock up on beer and wine if you are staying for a long weekend.  Indiana does not sell alcohol on Sundays.
Distance from Chicago: 150 miles (2.5-3 hours drive)
